Bob Weighton World Oldest Man

The Guinness Book of World Records on Monday officially recognized a man from the United Kingdom as the oldest living man.

Bob Weighton, who celebrated his 112th birthday this month, is now the oldest living man after the previous record holder, Chitetsu Watanabe, died in late February.

Video of the ceremony, which was performed remotely due to the U.K.’s lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus, showed the book’s editor Craig Glenday wishing Weighton a happy birthday and telling him that he was “officially amazing.”

“Just wanted to wish you many happy returns for your 112th birthday. I can confirm, remotely, that you are the oldest living man in the world,” said Glenday.

Weighton’s announcement comes as his home country is largely locked down due to efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus. He remains 4 years and 51 days shy of the record for the oldest age ever reached by a man in recorded history, which was set by Jiroemon Kimura when he died at the age of 116 and 54 days.

“I can’t say I am pleased to hear that the previous holder has died, but I am very pleased that I’ve been able to live so long and make so many friends,” Weighton told the Guinness Book of World Records.

NASA Warns Of 2 Asteroids Intersecting Earth’s Orbit This Week

Published

on

Asteroid Ghanaflaver.com
KEY POINT

  1. NASA detected an asteroid approaching Earth

  2. 2020 EF has a natural orbit that intersects Earth’s path

  3. The approaching asteroid is big enough to cause a powerful airburst

An asteroid following an Earth-intersecting orbit is about to approach Earth in a couple of days. Based on the data collected by NASA, the asteroid is big enough to create a violent explosion in the atmosphere if it ends up colliding with the planet.

The approaching asteroid if currently being monitored by NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNOES). According to CNEOS, the asteroid, which has been identified as 2020 EF, is currently moving towards Earth at a speed of over 10,000 miles per hour.

CNEOS estimated that the asteroid has a diameter of about 98 feet, making it slightly longer than the distances between baseball diamond bases.

According to CNEOS, 2020 EF is an Aten asteroid, which means it follows a natural orbit that crosses Earth’s path. As indicated in NASA’s orbit diagram for 2020 EF, the asteroid follows a very wide orbit around the Sun and almost follows the same path as Earth. Aside from intersections, the diagram also shows multiple near-approaches between 2020 EF and the planet.

Due to its size, 2020 EF will most likely not cause an impact event on Earth during a collision. Instead, the asteroid will probably break apart upon entering the atmosphere and cause an explosion in the sky.

Unfortunately, this does not automatically mean that a collision with 2020 EF will not be dangerous for Earth. As shown during the 2013 meteor explosion over the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia, mid-air explosions caused by asteroids can be very dangerous.

Depending on their sizes, the blast from space rocks can release energy equivalent to multiple atomic bombs. Although much of the explosion will be absorbed by the atmosphere, the remaining energy would still be powerful enough to damage buildings and injure people on the ground.

Fortunately, CNEOS noted that 2020 EF is not in danger of hitting Earth during its upcoming near-intersection with the planet. The asteroid is expected to approach Earth on March 18 at 11:15 p.m. EDT. During this time, the asteroid will fly past Earth from a distance of 0.04241 astronomical units or roughly 3.9 million miles from the planet’s center.

Court jails Police officer 20 years for robbery

Published

A Koforidua Circuit Court presided by Mrs Mercy Adei-Kotei, has sentenced a Police officer, lance corporal Seidu Gasty to 20 years imprisonment each on two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and to wit robbery and robbery.

The sentences are to be run concurrently.

The accused who was stationed at Akuse Police Station pleaded not guilty to both charges whiles a second accused, Kpornyo Seth Dodzi was acquitted and discharged for lack of evidence.

Assistant State Attorney, Mr Dickson Donkor, prosecuting, told the court that on March 26, 2018 around midnight a group of armed men numbering about eight of which some were armed with pump action guns and others with machetes besieged the Okwenya Shell filling station wearing mask and attacked two people who were at post as night security men.

He said the robbers instructed the security men to lie on the floor but one of them refused to comply with the order and as a result, he was subjected to severe beatings, but during the assault he saw someone who he identified as the accused, approaching where they were being assaulted.

The Prosecution said surprisingly, the accused joined in the assault as the attackers fired a gun to the head of one of the victims and again inflicted cutlass wounds on his forehead and his back.

Mr Dickson said the robbers then tied the victims on both hands and legs with belts and locked them up in a washroom, they then forced the main entrance to the supermarket opened, entered it, broke into an office safe and made away with an amount of GH¢ 37,851,000.

The prosecution said the owner of the filling station who is the complainant got wind of the robbery in the morning, visited the scene, met the victims locked in the washroom in critical conditions and rushed them to the Akuse Government hospital for treatment.

He said one of the victims was later referred to the 37 Military hospital for further treatment and when he was discharged later mentioned to the Police that on the day of the incident, he identified the accused Seidu, a Police officer and Kpornyo Seth Dodzi, a security officer at another filling station among the eight robbers who attacked them.

The Prosecution said on April 22, 2018, Detectives from the Regional CID acting on intelligence arrested these persons whom the victim had mentioned, and a search conducted on the accused led to the retrieval of one Brunei pistol mod 92 together with 2 magazines and three 1.8 mm ammunition, an axe, a knife, three pepper sprays, 10 wrist watches, a pair of handcuffs and a bayonet being possessed without lawful authority.

He said another search conducted in the room of Dodzi, the second accused at Trom, revealed eight BB live cartridges.

The Assistant State Attorney prayed the court to hand the accused a stiff punishment since he was a serving police officer who should have known better and protect the citizenry rather against such crimes, to serve as deterrent to others.

He also prayed the court to consider how the accused had shown no remorse and disrespect to the court throughout the trial and sentence him accordingly.
